They were very poor but they loved each other very much. Her mother never wants that her son will be like her, so she sent Malin to school in their village. Malin was a dilligent and smart student. Her mother was proud to him.

Malin grew up quickly. One day Malin Kundang told his mother that he would go to town and work there,
“Mom, I think that it’s time for me to work.”
“Sure, what job will you do?” His mother answered.
“I don’t know. But I must go to town to get a good occupation. My sallary is for you too, isn’t it?” Malin answered,
“Will you leave me alone?” her mother said sadly.
“Then, do you want to spend my precious time to treat you? What silly I am.” Malin bark and pushed down his mother. His mother fell down and cried. At first his mother did not allow him but finally she let him go with tears.

Malin Kundang went with ship which would come to town. Arrived in a big town, he looked for a work. Not longer he got a good job. Malin Kundang worked hard in a big company in that town and in a short time he became a rich man.
“Hahahaha, I can’t calculate how much money which I have. I can live with it. Nobody can mocked me now.”
Malin said in his heart. However he completely forgot his poor old mother in the village. Malin been an arrogant man.

Some years later he wanted to go for recreation. He made a trip over the sea and sailed to a harbor near his village. The society in that village busy to talk about that large-scale merchant. His mother heard about this news, immediately she came to meet him.

“My son! I miss you Malin.”
Her mother screamed and ran approached to him.

She wanted hugged him tightly, but, all of that was just a dream. Malin Kundang pretended not to know her.

He said,
“You are not my mother. Go away! My mother is a rich and famous woman!”

He pushed down his mother. His mother became very sad. Before Malin went to leave them there, her mother  said, “Oh, Malin Kundang, you are a wicked son. You’ll never be safe now. You and your money will turn to stone.” Apparently, those words were a depracation for Malin.

Malin was so regret to come to that village. Malin wanted to go out and looked for pleasent place. Malin’s ship left the harbor. After Malin went out, sadly, his mother thought and scared if what had she say would be a pray for Malin.

It was right, first, The sea was calm but when he reached the open sea there was a great storm. The ship was drowned. Malin Kundang and his money changed into a stone. Malin turned into a stone slowly.

That a punishment for rebellious child to their parents, especially to their mother.

Now people call it Batu Si Malin Kundang. We can see the stone from Air Manis, a village on the coast of West Sumatra near Padang.
